ENGLISH 305 COURSE INFORMATION
As an online course, the writing that we do in English 305 is substantially different from a face to face course. As such, it is imperative that you understand the course style from the start. Nearly all of your work in this course will be posted on the course blog.
EACH WEEK YOU WILL HAVE THREE BLOG ASSIGNMENTS:
1. A BLOG ENTRY,
2. A READING, AND
3. A WRITING ABOUT THE READING. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the Friday (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. You have all week each week to complete the reading and writing for that week, but there are no late assignments accepted, so be sure to be disciplined about the work from the start. Let me re-state that point; if you do the assigned work before or during the week it is due, you will receive full credit. If you do the work after the Friday of the week it is assigned, you will get zero credit for that week.

WEEK SIX BLOG ENTRY
Think about something you are good at doing...it could be anything from throwing a baseball to cooking flan...anything! Discuss the process you went through to learn to do that. Did you learn to do this thing on your own, with moderate or occasional assistance, or with a great deal of support?

Hmm...something I'm good at doing, let me think. I know this sounds crazy but I'm pretty good at cleaning house. I think it's because I'm the oldest of four children and grew up cleaning. My mother is a clean freak so I learned how to clean from her. When I was growing up I would watch my mother clean, she had a routine that she followed. I observed that routine and mimicked her cleaning style. First, I get everybody out of the house and turn the music on. Next, I work on the kitchen by washing dishes, sweeping, and mopping. Then I move on to the living room where I dust, vacuum, and wash windows. After the kitchen and living room are clean I start a load of laundry and then make my way to my bedroom. In my bedroom I make my bed, vacuum, and dust. After my bedroom is clean I begin working on my bathrooms. I truly despise cleaning bathrooms so I save those for last. I have two in my house so I work on them together. I scrub both toilets, move to the bathtubs/showers, and then the sinks/countertops. Lastly, I clean the mirrors to a sparkling shine, sweep, and finally mop. At that point, I continue working on laundry and light a few candles. This is my cleaning routine that I perform every Monday morning, like clock work. I know it may seem odd but as a wife, mother, employee, and college student cleaning house is something that I do well, and do often.
ReplyDeleteHow funny! I thought I was the only one that does this kind of routine! It just makes it so easier to complete the chores when you have a routine set up, isn't it? Do you get annoyed, though, when someone is helping you and they don't do it the same way you want it to be done, because I do!
DeleteWow, your routine is very impressive. I bet you have your house brilliant and super clean. I really like your idea about lightning a few candles after cleaning. I will definitely consider this idea for next time I clean my house in depth.
DeleteOMG Denise my mother was the same way! My mother would even make us scrub the walls with a brush, my cousins used to hate coming over between 8am-12pm because they knew our weekend routines! Now as adults they remind us during our family reunions and laugh about it.
DeleteDenise, I can't believe i almost do the same rountine as you do..and its so wierd that I enjoy cleaning the house, its almost like a hobby. And of course I have to have my music on or else it will be boring for me.
DeleteHeavy cleaning, that's what we do everyday. wow I guess we are alike in many ways.
DeleteLizet, I used to scrub the walls as well with a brush and I still keep doing it till now, but I pay my little brothers to do the work for me.
I totally understand!!! Being me, I'm so particular about things and I clean everyday here and there, but on the weekends is when I do my throughout cleaning. Having a routine definitely makes things so much more convenient especially because I do it so often.
DeleteI am with you Denise, I too hate cleaning restrooms. I always leave that for the end. It takes long and it is not fun. My routine is backward from what you do. I usually start with the bedrooms and work my way to the kitchen and living room. It is interesting to see other peoples routines.

ReplyDeleteThis may seem kind of bizarre but one thing that I’m good at doing is babysitting. I’ve been babysitting over the past 10 years and I would call it one of my hobbies. Although children can be a hand full and it is not an easy job to do, I enjoy babysitting children. It takes a process to learn to take care of children especially little small ones. It began when I was 15 years of age. My mom did not know who to leave my two younger siblings with. So, I suggested leaving my brother and sister to me. My mom was not too thrilled about the idea but she had no other choice. I took take of them for about two hours. I learned a lot that day of babysitting. I knew how to feed my siblings food, play with them, and care for them. It was not an easy job but I enjoyed it. After that day, I started babysitting my aunt’s kids which were a big responsibility because there were 3 boys plus my brother. There was more work because I have to change diapers, feed the kids, and bath them. It is not easy but I have a lot of patience and dedication in babysitting. From this day on, I still have patience in taking care of children, I guess because children love my presence. Overall, trying to learn something takes a big process in doing so.
ReplyDeleteYou like to babysitt? I didn't like to babysitt my nephews, it was tiring and a big responsibility; having to wakeup early on a non- school day wasn't so awesome, perhaps that could have been a reason why I disliked it plus my sisters irregular hours of picking them up.
DeleteI am a terrible baby sitter. I would always fall asleep before the baby did. Thats not a good idea.
DeleteI like to take care of the new-born babies (so cute). I love kids and I love to spend sometime with them. Kids are such a joy to my heart and I learn a lot from just watching them. Some kids amazes me when they talk back at you... hhhh cute!
DeleteWow, babysitting?!!! My hat goes off to you!
Deleteangelica, my mom is a babysitter and sdhe loves it too! so i can see why you love it. kids are awesome.great post
DeleteTo save money, I arranged my schedule this quarter so I can watch my two sons, an 8 month old and a 3 year old. I'm a marine, survived boot camp, served during a few wars, and must say watching my two kids is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. From the moment the first one wakes, it’s filled, with potty training, diapers, meals, heart attacks when one does something crazy, to countless other things. My wife doesn’t understand why I fall asleep at like 8 now a days. All babysitters should get a medal for what they do!
DeleteJust about everyday I cook a mean want-to-be mcmuffin with cheese. I learned how to fry an egg when I was in middle school. my mother taught me, one day she was tired of cooking it for me every day and said; hey I’m going to teach you that why you know from now on, what are you going to do when I’m not here. Now that I live on my own I very thankful for that lesson because I love frying eggs. The egg was the only thing I had heavy assistance on, after that one lesson I knew what I was doing. The breakfast sandwich idea came to me when I went to have breakfast at McDonalds. I thought hey I would love this at home every day, so I bought the stuff and put it all together, The process quick and yummy.
ReplyDeleteYour specialty is very appetizing. I love McDonalds menu, so everything that has to do with McDonalds is very delicious for me.
DeleteOmg Manuel, I love eat at McDonalds especially there breakfast menu its delicious!! Must be nice to know how to cook a breakfast like they have a McDonalds.
DeleteKnowing how to fry an egg comes in handy! I fry my eggs offten and I have to say, it is not easy. So thank your mom for that lesson.
DeleteCooking is not my cup of tea so this process will come in handy.
DeleteMany say that I do a pretty good job cooking! I guess its just the fact that I'm not afraid to mix spices or flavors together to come up with something new or to try to copy something that I've tasted before. Although, I think that I can still learn a lot when it comes to cooking, there is one thing that I'm very good at making. That is desserts, most especially fruit salad and leche flan. Fruit salad is much easier to do. As long as you have a balanced, sweet taste, you can easily just mix all the fruit you want and add condensed milk, whipped cream or heavy cream, and mayonnaise. Now, for the leche flan, on the other hand, can get a little trickier. I learned the proper amount of ingredients from my sister, who, as well, loved to cook. I learn the proper tricks on perfecting the flan just by practice. I remember the first time I made it was a disaster, but after several practice, I finally got it to almost perfect. I start with mixing 1 can of condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, lemon zest, a pinch of salt, 6 egg yolks, and 2 whole eggs together on a medium speed beater. While I set this aside to let the bubbles set in, I caramelized three tablespoon of sugar on the bottom of each stainless molding pan. When the caramelized sugar hardens, pour the mixture on top of it and steam it on low heat for 1-2 hours, covered. The trick here is to steam it really slow at low heat, in order to not let the mixture bubble and create a rough look in the flan.
ReplyDeleteEvery time there is a party, my friends and family would normally ask me to make some of this. Some even say that I could already start my own restaurant, which I plan to do so in the future. Maybe, after I go to a culinary school, I will.
Your Flan sounds good! I've had really bad as well. There is definitely a trick on making it just right. Your family is lucky to have an awesome cook like you.
Deletewow, your flan sounds pretty good! I remember the first time I made one and it was a disaster as well.... Now that you mentioned it, I am planning to make one tomorrow so thanks for the directions.
DeleteYour welcome guys! Maybe once I run my own restaurant, you'll get a taste of it. Thank you for trying the recipe, if you guys ended up trying it. Hope you liked it!
DeleteOne of the activities that I am very good at doing is playing soccer. I really enjoy participating in physical activities, especially playing sports. I have a strong passion for numerous sports, but particularly soccer. In the age of seven years old, I started to play soccer as an ordinary activity, but with the pass of the time, playing soccer converted in a strong passion. My middle brother was the connector who really got me involved in this exciting and popular activity. He was one of the best players in town, in Mexico, which served to me as an inspirational model to follow. Normally he used to take me to his soccer practices, and even though I was not a team member, I would always practice with them. Years later, my family decided to emigrate to the United States, where I had many discontinuities for playing soccer. I recall that the only lapse in which I played soccer was during my lunch period, with my classmates. This passion and dynamism for soccer really provoked on me to continue participating and getting involved in soccer teams. Next, when I entered High School, I decided to tryout for the school soccer team, in which officially I started playing soccer. During my high school stage, my strong interest for soccer led me to receive numerous recognitions that I never imagined. For example, I was nominated as the most valuable player of the Golden Valley High School varsity soccer team. Additionally, I was the top scorer of all High Schools here in Bakersfield. Furthermore, I was awarded with a recognition of the Jockey's club, an association who nominates the most outstanding athletes in Bakersfield. This achievements, I can say also belong to my brother since he was the intermediator/connector and my inspiration to continue playing this entertaining and fabulous sport. Overall, learning how to play soccer was an exciting and unique activity.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I remember soccer being fun in school as well. Congrats on all your soccer achievements!
DeleteThank you!:)
DeleteJoel that is great I too love soccer and played at GV for Varsity. I love playing it, but haven't played as often due to work and school.
DeleteI consider myself to be good cleaning my house, cooking I was told to learn by my husband and mom, but I wasn't enlightened by the kitchen, so I take considerable amount of time into inspecting and polishing an area of my house and go from there. I learned from my mom first when I was a young girl to clean up my room and from there on every area of the house; from brooming to empyting out the cabinets, I like to keep things organized and having a clean surface and area. When I lived with my parents I used to keep my house organized when my oldest siblings and family members came over, I or my twin sister would tidy up before visitors arrived, so I consider myself to be good at cleaning my house.
ReplyDeleteMe too! Sometimes I get teased for being a neat-freak, but I actually take pride in it. For me, I just like seeing and knowing that everything is clean. I'm a big fan of clorox cleaning products!
DeleteOne thing that I became very fluent in is using the program Adobe Photo Shop. This program is use to manipulate photos or create graphics. At a glance the program looked to be intimidating. I couldn’t do much at first, a few doodles here and there. I did not understand the program at all. I did not own any books to learn from, because they too expensive, and online resources were not the best (back in the 90’s). One thing I did have was time, patience, and the desire to make something really cool. I would spend hours playing with the tools, filters, and layer techniques. I created way to many ugly pictures and graphics in the beginning, and wasted too much space on my hard drive space by keeping all these files. I love going back to original files and seeing the differences, the improvements, and the art in my creations. Because I was self motivate to learn as much as I could, I was able to push forward when things became difficult and confusing. I eventually did take a class in college but did not benefit too much from it because it was geared towards beginners. I don't consider my self a professional or do any pro work, Photo Shop was just a fun tool I picked up and explored to the max.
ReplyDeleteYes, Ruben! I completely agree. As you said, time and patience allow us to develop new strategies on how to solve a complex task.
DeleteOne thing that I actually really good at is organizing. Growing up in a household with two younger siblings and a mother that worked a lot definitely contributed to my skills. My mother kept our whole house organized from our closets being color coordinated to the kitchen cabinets being neatly organized. While I was growing up everything had a place and I quickly learned that skill. Now that I am older and have my own house to clean and organize, I find that I still use those organizational skills that I learned growing up. My kitchen is neatly organized and all of the cabinets are set up for simplicity and ease. All of the skillets are in one cabinet and the same for the tubberware for example every cabinet has its own use. As soon as dinner is over the dishes are done and put back away so that the next time I get ready for something it is in the right spot. I also tend to use labels as well in order to keep things organized. I have a file cabinet that I also keep; it holds all of the important documents which each have their own folder. The linen closet is also neatly organized all of the bedding are neatly folded and kept the matching pillow case so that way I just have to grab the whole pillow case and everything is inside. I believe that my organizational skills allow for my household to not only stay clean but it makes it so much easier to find whatever I need to quickly and efficiently.
ReplyDeleteMy wife is exactly the same. I never realized how "important" it is to put things back where they belong until we moved in together. For a long period of time I could not understand why the cups and plates couldn't go in the same cabinet. To be honest, I still don't get it and its not important enough for me to ask. I am now trained and qualified to help out around that house and put stuff where it belongs :)
DeleteOrganizing is a must with me also! Especially now that I have my own family, it's so much easier when your kids and husband don't need to come running to you to find every little thing. Although, every now and then they still do.
DeleteI am exactly the same way. My closet is also color coded! Some people think I am crazy for organizing everything I come across. It's nice to know that there are people out there like me!
DeleteI am good at running. That sounds, well kinda weird, but I guess if you love to do it, then you think that you are "good" at it. I started running when I was about 12 years old. I was always very athletic, as I was a ballet dancer, and then a competitive cheerleader, but when all that went away, I decided I needed to find something to do to stay active and healthy. Plus, I wanted a reason to get out, and meet up with friends, and that seemed to be the best way to sell it to my parents. I convinced them that if I ran to a friend's house nearby, I was sort of killing two birds with one stone.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, after several years of casually jogging, I entered high school and heard about the cross country team. I thought that was the neatest thing, so I joined. I definantely was NOT the best one on the team, but I loved it so much, I received the most inspirational award, for motivating others to do their best. Running eventually became a lifestyle change for me, and then a part of my life. I saw a signifigant change in my running capabilities as I was being coached by experienced and avid runners. I was able to run farther, and faster, and loved the sport even more.
Now I notice that if I don't run for a couple of days, my mood becomes dark and gloomy.
I used to run cross country too, and it is still the best team I have ever been on. The girls were so extremely supportive of each other, and it made my whole experience very memorable. I threw up in the middle of my first varsity race, and the girls on the team that had finished already came back to run the rest of the way with me.
DeleteIt sounds like your quite the athlete. I too enjoy running, especially on a nice summer day. Also you do need anyone but yourself and you can do it pretty much anywhere.
DeleteSeems like a lot of people good at cooking or cleaning the house. What am I good at? I thought I would say cooking (I can cook and I learned at a very young age), but I will say that I am good at writing journals. I started writing journals at the age of 15 years old. I write mostly in Arabic so I can keep myself fresh in both languages, Arabic and English. I used to laugh at my friends who had their journals everywhere they go. I just write whatever comes to mind and as time went by, I got attached to writing and it was my way to reduce life pressure and school stress. As I went along with writing journals, I started to write short poems that expresses my inner feelings. How to put it? Writing became very important to me (part of me). Due to my tight schedule and school, I slipped a bit from writing because I barely have some time to rest. I keep some of journals, but I burn the once that I don’t want anyone to get a hold of. Sometimes, I go back and I read what I wrote and to be honest, I surprise myself for most of the time. However, journal gives me a clear image about some matters that are related to my personal life and I find myself at fault at times so I go back and I try to fix what I ruined. None of my family members actually write journals so you can say that I started writing just to try and see how it feels, but I ended up loving it.
ReplyDeleteThat's nice that you keep a journal, it's a good way to capture your memories. I used to keep a diary when I was in junior high, and well, it didn't last too long because I wasn't good at remembering to write in it.
DeleteI love to write even if it's not in the correct "essay" set up. I love writting my thoughts and feelings. I have diaries from 6 grade up to my freshman year in college! I have also recently started another one on my phone with a diary app it is amazing!
DeleteI am really good at jigsaw puzzles. This may sound a little silly, but try doing a 1000 piece puzzle with itty bitty puzzle pieces. It can be confusing. I started working on puzzles when I was four years old with my great grandmother. She had a certain way of doing things that I still follow today. She would always start by finding all of the side pieces first. So we would sift through and find as many side pieces as we could, and put those together to make the border of the puzzle. Then, if the puzzle had people in it, we would find the face pieces first, and build the rest of the body. Section after section we would begin to build certain objects of the puzzle, and begin piecing those finishedportions together to make the complete puzzle. We would finish huge puzzles in a few days and then paint them with glue and frame them as gifts. I've kept this going throughout my life, and i've taught myself little strategies to sifting through endless puzzle pieces.
ReplyDeleteI commend your patients! When it comes to puzzles I tend to get frustrated when I can't find a piece and tend to give up.
DeleteThat's great! I actually love working on jigsaw puzzles as well. It's such a great stress reliever. There was a point where I was so stressed out that I finished 1000 piece puzzle in a day and moved onto another set.
DeleteI love puzzles too! They are such a great way to numb the mind, with stimulating it at the same time. I think that they are a great stress reliever. Sometimes, puzzles even put the world in perspective for me. We are just one small piece of the puzzle. Everyone is an important piece, but together, we make a beautiful picture!
DeleteFrom what memory recalls, I have always been good at solving puzzles. The curiosity of finding all possible solutions intrigued me (and still does). My grandparents had a basement full of old electronics. I would take electronics apart and put them back together. Although it was very hard, It taught me that analytical thinking required patience. Now, as a Chemistry major, I truly appreciate what i learned at such a young age. I can take a very hard synthesis problem, and with some thinking time, I can manipulate the reagents to get the desired product.
ReplyDeleteFrom my personal experience, I believe nothing comes easy. It's a process in which you learn--like a trial-and-error method.

ReplyDeleteSomething that I've always been good at is multitasking. Through the years, I just kind of had to think of ways to be organized and at the same time get things done. When I became a wife and mother, it basically came with the territory that I would be needing to do several things at once. If I know I need to do laundry, I would put that in the washer first, then depending on what needs to be done, start those. Usually, my weekends for example, consist of me throwing the first load of laundry in, while that's going- start cooking, spray down and let the areas I'm going to clean first soak, help my daughter with her homework, and make sure my kids are fed, clean and not getting into things they shouldn't. By the time the afternoon comes around, I'm almost done with laundry, I got lunch cooking on the stove, and I'm vacuuming after all my cleaning is done. Every week I have a certain routine that I do and it works especially, because I try to balance being a wife, mother, and student I had to find a way to make sure I had time for everything.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that I'm good at is basketball. Starting at the age of 7 I began playing organized basketball. I had a hoop in my backyard where I would practice from the time I got home from school until it was too dark for to see the hoop. I always had a extreme passion to be the best I couuld be. Not only did I practice at home, I also had a lot of support from my family. My parents sent me to camps where I was able to hone my skills and expand my game. I really put a lot of hours in, not only during basketball season but year around. The great thing about sports is that you never stop learning new things and you can always make improvements in your game. I think sports are a great way to help young people learn about discipline and team work. A lot of the greatest moments in my life came in a gym.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I am very good at would have to be scrapbooking! I love to put together scrapbooks. It is something that I picked up on my own because no one in my family has this hobbie. It all came to be when one day I got tired of seeing all of our family photos dumpped in a big box. I enjoy looking at picutres and I figured that if they stayed in that box, no one was every going to enjoy them. So that is when I started. Completing scrapbooks is not an easy task. They take a very long time depending on the amout of effort you put into them. Once I was done with the first one, I couldn't stop. Now all my family has one made by me. I make them for birthdays and for major holidays most of the time. I find it to be fun and helps me take my mind off things when I am having a rough day.
ReplyDeleteThat's really neat. Perhaps I need to start doing this instead of keeping the photos in the photo album stashed away in boxes.
DeleteScrap-booking is a really creative hobby that I never had the patience to endeavor in. I am sure your family really appreciates you making them different creative gifts, they are truly memories that will last a lifetime. Good luck with your Scrap-booking!
DeleteI know this might be weird, but something I’m really good at is helping. Throughout my life, I have always been helping someone out. I remember when I was in elementary school I always stuck around the teachers and helped them out. Every time I finished my work, I would either help out another student or lend the teacher a hand. As I grew up, I found myself helping all the people around me. I would always put others before me. I would help classmates and friends with their work. There are times where I would put my work aside in order to help a friend in need. I would help friends and relatives babysit their kids. Anything and everything someone ask, I will try and help out. If I’m unsure of something, I will make sure I learn it just so I can help out. Until today, I am still finding time to help someone out.
ReplyDeletegood post cathy. helping is a great answer.very thoughtful
DeleteOne thing im good at is playing baseball. I am a pitcher for the CSUB
ReplyDeletebaseball team. I am really good at throwing a fastball for a strike at
anytime. The proces of thowing the baseball at knee high level right
down the plate is a tough thing to do, but with process and time it
takes great sucess in the end. I started playing baseball at age 5 and
havent stopped after that. It took me about 10 years to get down the
fundimentals of the game and how to accuratly throw a ball for a
strike. I call it the 10 year rule of sucess. it takes a good 10 years
of hard training to be at a world class ability and right now i think
i am at my best just because of all the training ive down in my life.
I am very good at a lot of things, but i feel baseball is important to
me and I want to play at the pro level, so i feel its what i am good
at because i spend so much time at being perfect in it. So throwing a
fastball for a strike is what im good at and it was a long process to
get there.
I always enjoyed playing baseball; I often got stuck in outfield, or 3rd base. One day I, they were looking for alternate pitchers and I tried out, boy let me tell you how much respect I have for any pitcher that can get it over the plate. I could put heat on the ball, but not even come close to a strike zone. The amount of skill and practice it must take is staggering. My hats off to you, I was glad for my outfield position after that.
DeleteI am good at doing hair and makeup. I wasn't always that way. When I was younger, I was completely clueless. I would never wear any makeup and I would let my hair dry naturally into a huge puff ball. After years of reading books, watching other people, and watching youtube videos, I am much better. I get compliments on my hair and makeup now all the time, surprisingly. I was an ugly duckling in my youth so I'm making up for it now. It did take a lot of trial and error, many bad haircuts and colors, and bad makeup choices. I feel comfortable with who I am now.
ReplyDeleteI like to do makeup Ruth, but I am not good doing hair. I think one day; I will go to take some classes to learn how to do hair and nails because I like that.
DeleteOne thing that I am really good is programming cash registers. First I learned how to put in receipts from my dad and eventually started to program cash registers. I program registers for my dad and his bussiness friends all the time. I learned to program cash registers all by myself. I just picked up a instructor manual and followed the step by step instructions. It was easier for me to program registers because I am familiar with cash register symbols and know what type of system I am working with. I had help from technicans that would come over to fix our registers. Overtime I became pro at fixing cash registers. I learned with a little help at first and eventually did not need any help
ReplyDeleteOne thing that I’m good at is working with children. I have been working with kids since I was 16. When I was in high school I took an elective course were I was sent to a childcare center, and there I began to learn a lot about children. For example, I learned the learning activities that are appropriate for different age stages. After I graduated I got hired as an childcare aide where I continued to learn more about kids. I learned how to keep a group of kids under control while doing group teaching. I learned what activities kids like the most to learn their colors, numbers, and alphabet. I learned that children learn through playtime time while interacting with other children and adults. I find it really fun to work with kids. They will always tell you the funniest stories, and the job is really rewarding. I worked at that childcare center for one year and a half before I got hired as a human health living skills aide. With this position I started working with special education students between ages three through thirteen. Working this position is what made me realize that I want to be become a special education teacher. I have learned so much from these kids. I have learned how to work with autistic children, Down Syndrome, and deaf mute students. I’m able to form a good relationship with students. I have learned that every child has a personality of their own and with time and patience you learn to adapt to every child.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I found I excelled at was being a jet engine mechanic. I was in the Marine Corps for 5 years and it was my job to tear down and rebuild jet engines, it was a hot, dirty, time consuming job. It required a lot of patience and being extremely careful, because either you built a jet engine, or you built a bomb, some of the parts spin at more than 64000 rpms, one hiccup and boom. It came naturally to me, and soon I was top of my class, then work center supervisor, then a quality assurance inspector. I never had to struggle with any aspect of it. Eventually I caught the attention of the engineers that designed the engine and after I got out of the service I was hired on to teach our NATO allies how to repair the engine. That was a dream come true, zero college experience; I flew around the world to different countries getting paid entirely too much for something that came so easy. Then one day, 6 years after working on the engines, I just grew tired, it became a chore, and something I started to hate. I quite shortly after a trip to Poland and enrolled in my local college and became an Emergency Medical Technician, which I was surprisingly good at also. Turns out, patching up human bodies is not much different than fixing an engine. I owe this all though I think to my Grandfather who wouldn’t let me have any other work ethic but a good one. Never shrug off or compromise your job, do your best, was what he instilled in me.
ReplyDeleteThe main thing that I'm really good at is multitasking. The truth of the matter is that I'm very well rounded. For instance, I work in sales and I manage to produce as many numbers as a full time employee, yet I work one whole day less per week. Furthermore, I go to school full time and I always find ways to get decent grades in my classes even though time is always against me. In addition, I live in a pretty big house that I have to keep clean since I live own my own. I also, enjoy playing basketball and love spending time with my girlfriend, so spare time does not exist in my world. I have learned at a young age that I must set goals and strive to achieve them. Success is never easy and the better I become at multitasking the better off I will be.
ReplyDeleteI am excellent when it comes to choosing healthy foods to eat. This process took me some time to adapt to because I had to change my lifestyle, which is a difficult thing to do. Choosing to perfect the skill of eating healthy came from recognizing peoples unhealthy eating habits. After taking my nutrition class in college, I really started noticing peoples lack in eating healthy foods. I acquired this skill on my own. Wanting to set a good example for my family, really pushed me to obtain and acquire the knowledge of eating healthier foods.
ReplyDeleteI am good at cooking. Everyone likes my food. I cook Peruvian food. Peruvian cuisine has a lot of influence from different countries such as China, Japan, Italy, German, and of course indigenous people from Peru. To learn how to cook, I went through a big process because I had to learn when I was thirteen years old. First, I tried to do it by myself, but I made a lot of mistakes. Then, my oldest brother tried to help me, and we failed again. Finally, my mom taught me some of her kitchen secrets, and I learned more kitchen secrets by myself. My children, my husband, and my friends love my food. Now, I am teaching my husband how to cook Peruvian food.
ReplyDeleteSomething I am good at and am currently doing a lot of this week would be swimming. I am a part of the Cal State Bakersfield Swim Team and at my Conference Championship swim meet in East Los Angeles. I am a senior so this is the last swim meet of my swimming career, which is definitely bittersweet. I have been swimming for 10 years and I started in junior high. My good friend did it and we wanted to spend more time together so I joined the club team in my hometown of Tehachapi. I picked it up quickly because I was already a strong swimmer, my parents who were also swimmers taught me at a very young age. I loved the water and loved swimming. Learning to swim competitively wasn’t easy but with many different coaches and stroke instructors I learned the technique behind swimming. As for the dedication and strength, I taught myself that. It takes a lot to wake up early and swim before school, in a cold pool, and twice a day; devoting 4 plus hours of everyday to one sport that goes year-round. It is up to the individual to choose this but support from family, fellow athletes, and coaches make it bearable.
ReplyDeleteI am a really good listener. It is hard to explain the steps of being a good listener just because many people would say just be quiet and let the other person talk, nut don’t realize that anyone can do that, being a great listener takes a lot. I can listen to anything from issues, to complains, to just someone venting out and capture in detail what the person is telling me. I love talking and am absolutely amazing at it, so it took me a long time to learn to just pay attention to what the other person was saying without thinking about what I wanted to say. I keep my mind in a blank state and try to just focus on what the individual is telling me, I also ignore any major chaos that can possibly be going on around me. People come to me all the time just to talk, because they know I am so willing to listen, and sometimes that's all someone really needs.
ReplyDeleteI believe I am a good baker. While others are born with a natural ability to cook and bake, I had to learn and enhance my baking skills through trial and error. The beginning process was simple; I would try different baking recipes that were moderately easy for a beginner. However, I noticed that certain ingredients found in recipes would sabotage the results of my baking and I also began to understand the importance of using certain ingredients. For example, a lot of baking recipes call for a pinch of salt and I never understood why until I started baking myself. I would also research certain things on google and websites specializing in cooking and baking to help enhance my baking skills. While I did not require a great amount of help, I did need a moderate amount of help to increase my skills.
ReplyDeleteI can write poetry. I have been told by others that it is a talent I possess. I learned to do it on my own when I was fourteen years old and going through a major depression. I felt that I didn't have anyone to talk to (my parents bounced me around relatives to live with) so I began to journal my feelings into poetic form. When I began college, I initially went to complete my nursing prerequisites and I was required to complete my general education. I took an English class with a professor who changed my life. I know my teacher had a passion for what she read and what she assigned us to read. I actively participated in discussions, and continued to write poetry and felt compelled to start a memoir. I changed my major to English and since then have learned a great deal more from my professors. There is always room for improvement and I find it so interesting to compare my writing now to that which I first created when I was fourteen years old. I am consistently learning new things in writing and literature.
