ENGLISH 305 COURSE INFORMATION
As an online course, the writing that we do in English 305 is substantially different from a face to face course. As such, it is imperative that you understand the course style from the start. Nearly all of your work in this course will be posted on the course blog.
EACH WEEK YOU WILL HAVE THREE BLOG ASSIGNMENTS:
1. A BLOG ENTRY,
2. A READING, AND
3. A WRITING ABOUT THE READING. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the Friday (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. You have all week each week to complete the reading and writing for that week, but there are no late assignments accepted, so be sure to be disciplined about the work from the start. Let me re-state that point; if you do the assigned work before or during the week it is due, you will receive full credit. If you do the work after the Friday of the week it is assigned, you will get zero credit for that week.

If i had to choose one person from all of history to have a drink have with, i would choose teddy Roosevelt. He was in my eyes the most interesting US president to date. The man went on safaris, hunted, took troops to war all while ruling the strongest country in the world. When he died his eldest son sent a telegram to his younger brother saying the great lion has died. If his own sons called him the great lion, that says something about his character. He was also an environmentalist and a humanist. Him and i would share a bottle of whiskey, that drink would most likely suit him. My first question would deal with his speech when he got shot and still finished the thing before heading to the hospital.
ReplyDeleteGreat man and great rolemodel. Very inspiring. He was one of the first pepole that popped into my head when I read this assignment.
DeleteGreat person to choose. He was a very great person.
DeleteTeddy would be a great person to talk with
DeleteHe really did do a lot of great things for our country and I'm sure you guys would have a great conversation.
DeleteIf I could go back in time, I would like to have a drink with the biggest rebel of all time, Jesus Christ. It would have to be over a glass of pure (unpolluted) water. I want to know more about my faith in him. I have a million questions about his love for the world. I want to hear the word of God, not found in the pages of the Bible. What was he doing for 30 years, before his ministry? I chose water because I’m curious of the taste. It may sound silly, but I bet pure, un-filtered, and un-treated water, had a different taste because man had not had an impact on the environment like we have today.
ReplyDeleteVery great person to choose. I would have choosen the same Jesus.
DeleteThats great that you're curious about your own beliefs and values. 'Til today, I'm still unsure as to what exactly my beliefs and values are because I never really learned about where it all began.
DeleteIt is very interesting your decision Ruben.I also have numerous question for Jesus. I would really enjoy having a drink and dialoguing with this amazing divine man.
DeleteI question my faith on a daily basis, and I would be totally excited if I were given an opportunity like this. I would have so many questions about life, creation, evolution, and the history of earth. Science can be contradictory to sprituality and religion, and I want to know that I can believe in something that I can't see.
Deletewhen I read this weeks blog entry, I thought about Jesus Christ as well, I would like to hear about his life through his own words and ask him about the purpose of the existence of every life on this planet.
DeleteIf I could have a drink with anyone from all of history, I would choose Martin Luther King Jr. Even though he was alive not too long ago compared to other people who have made history, I believe he would be a very interesting person to sit down with and talk to. I chose Martin Luther King Jr. because at the school where I work the children recently learned about him and just listening and watching his speaches over again they still give you chills. I think if he were still alive it would be very nice to actually see him in person and be able to hear his speaches in person. I think it would be very inspiring to our young children today. I don't think they fully grasp what he fought for when they are so young. Being able to ask him questions and have him explain at a level where they could understand would be the greatest. Mr. Martin Luther King seems to me like a very laid back person who is easy to get alon with, so if I had to choose a drink to share with him I would say someting simple like lemonaide.
ReplyDeleteMLK Jr. is definitely a good one! He was truly inspiring and fought for equality with a passion.
DeleteMartin Luther King Jr. certainly made a tremendous impact in our society. His non-violent protests to eliminate the racial issues are an excellent example of dedication and perseverance. Undoubtedly, Martin Luther King Jr. is a great selection.
DeleteMartin Luther Kings Jr would definetly be an amazing person to sit down with. I would like to hear his thoughts on society today.
DeleteMartin Luther King Jr. would be a truly inspiring individual to talk to. He never backed down or compromised his civil rights crusade regardless the pressure he was put in. He was and always will be a breath of fresh air in the stagnant world of politics.
DeleteIf I could have a drink with anyone from all of history, i would choose Christopher Columbus. I want to know his real intentions for first initiating the discovery of the New World. Besides the three G's, which are God, Glory, and Gold, which one of them was most important to him? It is said in history that he wanted to spread religion to guide those individuals who lack the knowledge regarding the existence of God. Many of the discoverers sought fame and riches, so i want to also ask him, did he ever get swayed by glory and fame? The type of drink that i would have with Christopher Columbus would be a cup of tea.
ReplyDeleteIf I could have a drink with anyone from any point of history, it would have to be with Stephen Hawking! I know that he is still alive and is suffering from ALS that have paralyzed four regions of his body, but I just wonder how awesome it would be to pick his brain. We would be drinking a decade old sweet red wine, while we talk pretty much about any topic that we could think about. After all, he is one of the most accomplished physicist and cosmologist. I would love to asked him questions about his theories for how the universe came into existence, and whether he believes that there is an actual God that created it. I would love to learn more information about the existence of black hole and what it does. I am also interested in getting a close insight on how the machine that enables him to communicate works, ask him about his experience through growing up and coping with ALS. I have all the respect for the man and I would love to know how he does keep that respect.
ReplyDeleteIf I could have a drink with anyone from all history it would have to be Albert Einstein. I choose him because he is a very smart man who developed the theory of general relativity, effecting a revolution in physics. He is also known as “the father of modern physics” and the most intelligent men in human history. He also received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics. He got his intelligence from his father, Hermann Einstein who was an engineer. That is when his father pursued him to study electrical engineering. The drink that I would choose with Albert Einstein would be a big cup of Dr. Pepper with a lot of ice. The first thing I would ask Albert Einstein is that he is an awesome and intelligent man, and how does it feel to be so smart. Also, I would ask him if he can share with me his first experience he discovered in physics.
ReplyDeleteI would have love to get that same opportunity! I would really like to ask him about his experiences trying to develop new things with such a limited sources. What an amazing, intelligent man he is to be able to do such work he did, despite that fact.
DeleteThere are many intelligent being throughout history, but the person I would choose to sit down and have a drink with would have to be Gautama Buddha. I chose Buddha because just like Ruben, I want to know more about my faith and beliefs. I grew up attending the Wat Lao Buddhist temples; however, I feel that I don't quite know much about my own beliefs to actually understand what exactly it is that we believe. I would love to go into more depth of what it is that Gautama Buddha was teaching because nowadays, it is not the original ways and ideas of teachings. There have been many events that has changed the original values and beliefs that Gautama Buddha was teaching and I would love to know the original teachings. Like other religions, Buddhism has many different types.
ReplyDeleteSame here, I grew up going to Buddhist temples too, but I had not idea what was going on. I had to go because my parents made me, and they would try to explain the reasoning behind each ceremony. I didn't even understand what the monks were chanting about. Until this day, I still have no clue about the proper order of things in the temple.
DeleteThat would be interesting, I am catholic, but my father is filipino and we have always believed in Buddha to bring us wealth in rubbing his tummy.
DeleteIf I could share a drink with anyone from all of history, it would be with Cleopatra! Why? Because the stories, movies, and just the history of how she became the "Queen of the Nile" had always interested me. Like most things that occurred so long ago, most historians are not sure exactly what really happened, but they tried to piece together as much as they could from their findings. There has been different takes about her infamous life, and I just thought it would be cool to hear about her love affair, her rise to the throne, and the allegations of murdering her own brother from the queen herself. Yes, it seems crazy given her supposed reputation that I would want to have a conversation with her, but luckily, it's all hypothetical. As far as our drinks, I see her as the red wine drinker type, which she would have a barrel full next to her, and I would be going to work on a pitcher of beer since wine is not my thing.
ReplyDeleteIf I could have a drink with anyone from all of history, it would be with Jesus Christ. The reason of my selection is that I am very interested in learning more about my religious beliefs. Additionally, I would like to ask him about the mysterious and perfect plan that he has for me and that I have not deciphered yet. I would like to dialogue with him and just contemplate his beauty, wisdom and perfection. Similarly, I would like to express my gratitude for all the blessings he has gave me over my entire life. In my perspective, the immense love that he had for humanity when sacrificing himself in the cross is the most impressive sign of the infinite love he has for us. As far as the drinks, I would prefer to drink simply a cup of a refreshing green tea. The combination of the most incredible and admirable divine person with a fresh green tea would make the perfect gathering. Overall, having the opportunity to interact with Jesus Christ it would be the most extraordinary gift that I could ever receive.
ReplyDeleteIf I could have a drink with anyone it would be Oprah. I feel that she is a very wise woman and I could learn a few things from her. The first reason that I would want to sit down and have a drink with her is because she is a very influential and powerful woman. I have always been a huge fan; I grew up watching her show every afternoon with my grandmother. She is not only a famous talk show host but also a philanthropist and an example of a strong black woman. Despite the hardships that she faced early on in life, she was able to rise up and become successful. I believe that sitting down and having a drink with Oprah would be enlightening. She has interviewed some of the most famous political leaders and entertainers of our time and she isn’t afraid to ask the hard questions. I feel that I would stand to learn a lot from her simply by being able to meet her and have a casual drink. I think that we would have cocktails maybe a few lemondrops, my favorite drink. She tells it like it is and I admire the fact that she stands up for what she believes is right despite what might be proper or popular.
ReplyDeleteOprah would be awesome! I too, admire how she came from nothing to becoming someone so powerful and influential. With the knowledge and experience she has, we could all learn something from her.
Deletegood post!
DeleteOprah would be a fun one! Her life is crazy! She is wealthier beyond belief, does amazing work charitable work in the world, and came from nothing. I would love to learn what kind of adversity she faced and what the key to her success was.
DeleteOprah would be an excellent choice! She has interviewed almost every celebrity, talking to her would very useful in regards to getting to know all the A list celebrities!
DeleteI would choose to have a milkshake with Marilyn Monroe. She was beautiful, curvy and a major sex symbol in her day. Even today her pictures fill most of my girlfriend’s rooms, and can be found almost anywhere. I admire her beauty and confidence with her figure. I would ask her what she did to keep it, what she ate to be “healthy”, and what she would think of the models and actresses of today’s generation. I would love to see her beauty in person, and I know a curvy girl isn’t afraid of a milkshake!
ReplyDeleteThis is actually a really good choice. I would love some time getting inside her mind, and getting to know the kind of person she really was. She definitely was beautiful and graceful. Her and Elvis Presley would both be great to share a drink with.
DeleteIf I could have a drink with someone from all of history, it would be with Jesus Christ because he was the best leader in the world. I have a lot of questions that I would like to ask him. I would like to know as a man what he felt when he knew he would die in such a punishment way? Did he feel angry with the people in society at that time? Was he upset with God, our father, for this challenge he had to pass? Also, I would like to ask as a leader how he influenced his followers? Does he want to come back again, and do the same thing or would he like to change something? Of course, I would like to drink a glass of red wine with Jesus Christ.
ReplyDeleteBy far the most important person in our history and that I would to meet. Great choice!
DeleteI would love to sit down with Jesus, but would feel guilty asking questions. I don’t think I would find any worthy enough of his time. I like your questions because none encroach faith, or ask him to reaffirm it. I think he would enjoy answering those questions because there are for him, and not what he is a part of.
DeleteOf course, everyone knows about he was par of the Christianity, but nobody knows about his feelings.
DeleteIf I could have a drink with someone in history, it would be Selena Quintanilla and while conversating with her I would offer her a drink of hot tea with honey and lemon a drink she would have before a concert. Selena was murdered at a young age; at 23 years of age to be exact, I would ask her being once a fan of hers; what lead up to the day of her death, what could have she changed to still be around til this day? Was her dad harsh on her growing up, was she really happy with her husband Chris, did she plan on having any children with him? What would be the next hit single if she could have an album this year?
ReplyDeleteJessica I love her music! She was extremely talented and full of life. I have watched hed movie many times and it never gets old.
DeleteI too til this day enjoy her music and can remember wanting to be like her one day. She was an inspiring young artist.
DeleteShe would be great to talk to. Her story was such a sad one.
DeleteWhat a tragic story. I like your choice of drink, she would drink that before every performance. Amazing artist.
Deleteif i can have a drink with a person from history it would have to be
ReplyDeleteMartin Luther King also. He is a hero to all of us to stand up and do
what he did. I would ask him questions on what it was like during the
time of segregation from blacks and whites and how he became so strong
to stand up for what he believed in. I would learn so much from that
man and take in everything he had to say. The drink i would have with
him would probably be some nice wine from napa valley.
If I could sit and talk to anyone I would choose Ernesto “Che” Guevara. I found his history to be interesting since my way of thinking is completely the opposite of his. I would like to know what lead to his way of reasoning, to know what were some major incidents in his life that lead to his decision making. I would like to know what his last words were since there are so many quotes that many believe to be his last. I would feel like a journalist, our sit and talk would be more of an interview rather that a happy friend conversation. I really don't know what drink we would have, maybe some rum since it is so popular in cuba.
ReplyDeleteYes! I'm also amazed at how Ernesto Guevara rationalized different situations.
DeleteErnesto Che Guevara was a revolutionary person in the Latin America for his Marxism ideologies. He was a very good friend of Fidel Castro. Good choice.
DeleteIf you could have a drink with anyone from all of history it would definitely be Jesus Christ son of God. I would probably be like the women who touched his rob, and tell him that I love him and that I’m thankful for everything he did for me. We would sit down and have a glass of wine while we had a long conversation. I don’t think I would ask him much; I would just want to hear about his life in his own words. I would like to hear about his childhood, how did he feel when others let him down, and what gave him the courage to keep on going. I have never doubted my faith in him, but I would like him to tell me why are we here? What is the purpose of each life? What is the purpose of humanity as a whole? What will be the purpose of our existence if humanity ever ceases to exist? I would also ask him to help me keep my focus on him all my life so that I would go to heaven. I would also ask him what my talents were so that I might serve him better and using my best talent to his glory.
ReplyDeleteAwesome post! I have wondered those same exact things but I do know that His Word is true and everlasting. Keep the faith and never take your eyes off of Him. He is your rock!
DeleteIf I were to have answered this question all over again, I think I would have said Jesus Christ as well. It would be so amazing to hear the words come from his mouth directly. Great thought!
DeleteIf I could pick anyone in history to have a drink with it would be Walt Disney. This man has been a part of many children's childhood memories in this world through his cartoons or theme parks. He has left an everlasting imprint in almost all humanity at least in North America. The main thing that I would ask is if he ever imagined Disney becoming so monstrous and is he happy with the overall outcome? Since Disney brings out our inner child I would drink a hot chocolate with Walt Disney and ask him to share stories of his childhood. I would also be very curious as if he would add any new characters or get rid of some of them. In the end, it would be an honor to converse with such a creative mind.
ReplyDeleteRicardo that is an awesome choice! I forgot about him and I am definitely one of many that as soon as I enter the park become a child again.
DeleteIf I cold have a drink with anyone from all of history it would be Madhuri Dixit who is one of greatest actress of all time in Bollywood. I chose her because she is one of my idols and I love to watch her movies. She is one of the most unique actresses and now she is retired, but she sometimes appears in some movies. Being one of the most popular actresses she is down to earth and not snobby like some. During this meeting I would imagine drinking some old fashioned indian chai and just chatting with her with her about her experiences in the Bollywood industry.
ReplyDeleteIf I could have a drink with anyone it history it would have to be Jesus Christ. I absolutley love Jesus and everything he taught during his ministry and still teaches through his word today. He's the most influential person to have ever walked the earth. Jesus and I would have a nice cold glass of iced tea and I would get to ask the Son of Man why he gave his life for such a wretched undeserving soul like me. Because I have a personal relationship with him I talk to him every single day but to see him in the flesh would be absolutely amazing. In the end, I know without a shadow of a doubt that one day I will see him face to face. When that moment arrives I hope that I will hear, "Well done my good and faithful servant."
ReplyDeleteI would want to drink with Hunter S. Thompson. He is one of my favorite authors and an inspiration to me. I would love to pick his brain and ask him about all of his life experiences. We would drink anything and everything, because that's just his type of personality! Probably Rum, though.
ReplyDeleteNevermind, we would definitely drink "a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, and a pint of raw ether."
ReplyDeleteWow! This is such an interesting question!
ReplyDeleteFrom all the possible choices, I would say: Dmitri Mendeleev. This Russian chemist discovered the first rough draft of the periodic table. Most of his findings were only theoretical. However, as we know, science must always have 'proof' of any observed phenomena. After conducting several years of research (exploring elemental properties), he published his first copy of the periodic table. I would want to drink with this brilliant man as he helped to create the foundation of Chemistry. I would ask him what his motivated him? Or, what led him to his discovery of properties for the found elements?
What drink? Virgin Piña Colada
I would definantely have a drink with Princess Diana! When I was a little girl, I would watch her on the news. Even though I was only like five or six years old, I could just sense her character and grace. I thought that she was, and still is in my opinion, one of the most beautiful woman of all time. She had style, class, and a heart of gold. She absolutely used her fame for the best. She channeled her energy into trying to make others better. She was a world traveler, an obviously wonderful and caring mother, and an example of what a strong woman is. Even in hard times, like her divorce, she came out smelling like a rose.
ReplyDeleteI think as a woman, Princess Diana is a wonderful example of how we should act. Her ability to remain humble throughout the years made her shine, and she will always been missed.
If we were going to have a drink together, I think we would both enjoy a nice glass of Chardonnay.
I always saw her on t.v too when I was a kid and thought she was so beautiful and classy. You are right, I believe also that she maintained her wonderful and caring reputation throughout her life. Thank you.
DeleteI love this question; the one person I would choose to have a drink with would be Gandhi. The drink of choice would be water with some lemon juice, it is what he drank during his fasting. Although now that I think about it, he may want something else to drink if given the choice. I chose Gandhi, because he showed how much one life can make a difference. His form of passive resistance played a large part in reducing Britain’s influence on the country, but it was his fasting or starvation that produced the lion’s share of change. We see it in the news every day, religion on religion violence. Often this violence ends in bloodshed and death which seems the opposite of most religions intentions. Yet Gandhi quelled these religious conflicts in his country by simply not eating. One man, stopped bloodshed through a simple but powerful act that did no harm but to himself. I would not ask him why, or how? But simply how he felt during those days he struggled with his fasting. I would get to see a hero, and understand what he went through.
ReplyDeleteIf I could sit down and have a drink with anyone from history it would have to be with Tupac Shakur one of the greatest and most controversial rappers of all-time. I would love to hear stories about his childhood, the conditions he endured growing up, and how he got into music. I think we would have a lot of fun and some great conversation. Yet he had issues and problems with the law, he was an amazing innovator when it came to rap. Also most people don’t know how intelligent and informed he was on social issues. I would love to hear his thoughts on society today. The drink would have to be crown royal on the rocks (ice). It’s a great smooth whiskey that I know Tupac and I would really enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI love love love Tupac! I am glad you chose him. I was hoping that someone did because he played a major role in bringing light to the situations of the streets. He was very political and I love his music. Thanks.
DeleteIf i could have a drink with anyone from any point in history, it would have to be with my dad. I never got to meet him so i would just want to have a casual conversation and get to know him! I think we would have a conversation over a bottle of chateau st. Michelle Gewurztraminer, simply because its my favorite wine.
ReplyDeleteIf I had the opportunity to have a drink with anyone from history, I would choose Harriet Tubman. She is a courageous woman who sacrificed her life for the sake helping slaves make their way out of slavery. She is an extremely influential person that paved the way for slavery abolishment and women's rights. I would love to hear her outlook on life, and how she overcame all the hardships she faced. I would also love to hear her reflections on the missions she went through in the underground railroad. As far as our drinks, I think we would both enjoy something light and refreshing like lemonade.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a question! So many people I wish I could go back and speak with, longing for a better understanding. I would ask Lewis Carrol if he really was a child molester. I would plead with Karen Carpenter to believe that she was stunning and talented and be a friend to help her through her anorexia. Okay, I guess I have to focus on ONE person. It would have to be the writer Sylvia Plath. I would be drinking some non-alcoholic beverage and Sylvia could drink whatever she wanted. I would compliment her on her works and literary style. I would tell her how much her writing meant to me. I would tell her not to take her own life and that she had too much to lose. As a mother, a would tell her to be there to watch her children grow up and that she will be happy that she did. I would tell her that studies on depression and mood disorders were improving and there will be great progress in the realm of psychotherapy and anti-depressant medicines. I would have told her that things will get better if you hang in there.
ReplyDelete
