ENGLISH 305 COURSE INFORMATION

As an online course, the writing that we do in English 305 is substantially different from a face to face course. As such, it is imperative that you understand the course style from the start. Nearly all of your work in this course will be posted on the course blog.
EACH WEEK YOU WILL HAVE THREE BLOG ASSIGNMENTS:
1. A BLOG ENTRY,
2. A READING, AND
3. A WRITING ABOUT THE READING. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the Friday (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. You have all week each week to complete the reading and writing for that week, but there are no late assignments accepted, so be sure to be disciplined about the work from the start. Let me re-state that point; if you do the assigned work before or during the week it is due, you will receive full credit. If you do the work after the Friday of the week it is assigned, you will get zero credit for that week.

WEEK TWO BLOG ENTRY

How is your life different because of new technologies? How much energy do you expend checking email, texting, or playing games? Try to add up some of the time you spend each day online, on the phone, or texting.
As you write, try to avoid any judgemental or reflective comments. After your initial writing, you can think about what it means, but at first, just try to capture a sense of how much time is spent, devoid of judgement.

  1. I have a routine. Every morning when my alarm goes off, I grab my phone and check my email. I normally get email from websites I've subscribed to, etc. I then go to the news app on my phone to see if there are any new articles posted locally, nationally or in the business sector. I check my bank account balance and pay any bills due. I listen to Pandora on my phone while getting ready for work. On my breaks at work, the first thing I do is check my email and reply to any texts received prior to my break time. I typically spend my entire break having a conversation, through texts. On my breaks, I make any necessary phone calls for business matters. After work, there is usually a text message conversation going on. To recap and condense, I use my phone for everything, everyday. At home, I typically watch TV shows I missed the night before online on my computer. It is safe to say that at any given point throughout the day, whether it be a weekday or a weekend, I am using technology. At work, at home, running errands, I am using some piece of technology to stay connected.

    1. I am on my poor iPhone constantly as well. It is just sad, but I would be lost without it. I often think what it will be like when my son is my age. I wonder what kind of technology he will have at his fingertips. I am sure that he will be laughing at the stories of the early iPhones and the "hardships" that we had to go through while they worked all of the "bugs" out!

    2. Casey, sounds like our day looks the same when it comes to haveing our phone with us all day long. My family always gets on me for letting my time revove around it. To be honest I dont really watch tv anymore because most of the shows are available online to watch like you said.

Nicole, I ask myself that same question everyday! If this is technology today, what is it going to be like in the next ten years or so?

  2. Technology makes common activities like banking, bill paying, shopping, and staying in touch with friends, particularly those out of the area, much easier. Technology also makes news, weather, and world events instantly available. Research and access to a broad range on online resources are available now that were unheard of even a decade ago. With all that said, I don't do a lot of communication online due to my daily tight schedule and our house rules enforce me not to spend much time in front of the computer.I do bank checking from time to time and I started to really check emails because of school other than that, I will say that I have little time for new technology. I rarely send text messages on my phone; in fact, I got a phone a few months ago, but I didn't have one before then. Perhaps, with time, I will become a little more comfortable with texting. I do not play games on the computer, tablet, phone, etc. However, I do listen to music especially when I am working on something online. So, I only use computer during school time and for research purposes.

    1. Hi Abeer! I would like to say that we do have something in common; that is our unfamiliarity with the latest phone that are out in the market now. Though I have been using a cell phone for years now, I did not get my first smart phone until this past holiday. Before I got this phone, the only use for my phone is primarily for communication and alarm clock. There is not much games that I could play in it and no internet access. I also did not spend much time online until now due to job search and I am taking more online classes. I do admit that I am big on television though.

    2. That's really great Abeer that you haven't fallen into society's trap regarding technology. Sadly, I can not say the same. I often wonder if my life was this complicated before the advent of devices such as the iPhone. That being said, however, I really enjoy being connected to family and friends 24/7. I have a very busy, on the go schedule and I just don't think I could manage without trlechnology, especially my iPhone. Being so busy, it's hard to stay connected with no only friends and family, but what's going on in the world. Kudos up you for not being a slave to technology :)

    3. Casey, first of all, allow me to thank you for your comment;however, I understand the whole thing about communicating and what not, but what would happen to us if something happens to our daily technology? do you think we will be able to survive and for how long?
from my prescriptive or as I see today, I see young people who are attach or extremely attached to their phone, ipads, and many other technology usage and its to the point where they text in classes with no consideration that he/she might be bothering the person sitting next to.

    4. Rose, we indeed have something in comment and its kinda funny in days like today because even people who can't pay their tuition, yet, you see that they have the most expensive phone or the latest in the market.

    5. Abeer, you have some very good points. I know for sure we would survive without technology. We had to do it to get where we are today. Myself, personally, I don't care much for cell phones, ipads, Xbox, whatever. Not my thing. I don't have an answering machine and I only have a cell phone because I am looking for a job. With the the freedom to use more technology comes the bondage of us owning less and less of ourselves. Also, I know people do banking online and pay bills. Just be careful. I have had my identity stolen twice and hundreds taken from my checking acct. A great class to take is Literature and Technology with Dr. Dell'amico. She is wonderful and the books are amazing.

  3. Time in front of a computer screen, texting, or talking on a cell phone are just a few of the things I spend doing on a daily basis. Technology has definitely had an impact on how we live our lives. For instance, years ago when I was newly married paying a bill involved writing a check, purchasing a stamp, and going to the post office to mail it off. Nowadays all I have to do is log onto my computer, while still in my pajamas, click a few keys and just like that a bill has been paid. At times technology appears to have made my life more convenient however, there are times I wish I could have a day free of technology. In general I do spend time at work checking and responding to emails, I usually send out a few text messages a day, but I don't play any games whatsoever. In fact as a rule of limiting my computer time I don't have a facebook account or internet service on cell phone. After work, I do watch the news and maybe a TV show here and there. Overall I am spending three to fours using some sort of technological device.

    1. Your prove a good point in what you say, I also saw myself doing everything online it was inexpensive and convenient for me like for example my bank branch was in another city that is about 30 minutes away, so instead of making the drive and making long lines sometimes it is just easy to access a computer and see my account balance etc.

  4. Having new technologies is very easy in my daily routine. It has a big impact in my life. When I wake up in the morning I start my daily routine which is checking my emails and text messages. Then when I’m getting ready to go to school or work, usually have music on through my phone. While I’m at school I also check if I have any emails or text messages, so I’m constantly on my phone. Throughout the day, I message more than talk on the phone, which I find easier. When I get home from school, I usually turn on my computer while I’m watching TV to check browse around websites, such as stores or the news. I think the only time I do not have my phone with me is when I’m in the shower, eating, or sleeping. When it’s about time to go to bed I listen to music on my phone because that relaxes me and makes it easily to fall asleep. Nowadays, technology is an easy way to access things.

    1. Angelica, I couldn’t agree with you more on the cell phone routine. When I wake up, first thing I do is check my phone for texts and emails. Then it’s not long before its playing music, and often through the day I send texts and check emails with it. I too find texting a lot easier then talking on the phone. If I try to think why I prefer texting it’s hard to come up with an answer yet I’m firmly in favor of texting. I think the best way to call what we do now with technology is plugging in, we plug in to the information, immerse ourselves in it which seems second nature to us yet so new.

    2. Technology definitely has a tremendous positive impact in our lives. I agree with your opinion since technology allows us to fulfill our daily tasks in a convenient way, and simultaneously delight us with the entertainment that it offers, such as listening to music and watching movies. It's just amazing!

  5. Aside from using technology to communicate with friends, families, and distance relative, it had definitely made it easier for me to get daily task done. To be able to do my school work, I have to have access to computer and the web. Television and my phone provides me with entertainment and keeps me up to date with what is going on around me. Also, one of my passion is to cook. Having access to internet allows me to search for recipes that I can easily follow. I guest I can say that technologies have help me very much to accomplish my daily routine. I’m sure that there are many of these things that can be done without the use of technologies, but it definitely does makes it easier and faster to get done.

    1. Rose you have a good point. Technology today has helped me in a huge way when trying to get my daily routine done for the day. I love how you can do anything from your phone now. I can use my gps on my phone to get to a place much quicker or I can look up phone numbers or anything else I may have questions on. Technology has definetly made my life easier in that respect.

  6. My life has changed dramatically due to new technologies. This class is a perfect example i am able to receive college credit toward a class without stepping foot in a class room. The advent of credit and portable computers has made it so that i can do what i just mentioned in my pajamas. I expend a rather great deal of energy checking my email and texting. Every morning the first thing i do is shut my phone alarm off and proceed to check my email application. Once that is complete i then open my text message application and check that. On morning when i have time i check my facebook as well. adding up all the hours of the day i would say i spend about 4 hours a day on my phone and laptop.

    1. If I were to have less technology in my life, I would be better off. I have found that the more and more I surround myself with technology such as cellular phones, computers, tablets, iPads, and Wi-Fi McDonald's, (you get the point), my life seems to revolve around updating myself with useless knowledge and things that I should definantely not be caring about.

I spend more time on Facebook, than I with my immediate family. It is disturbing to point out that I knew where a guy I attended the the third grade with vacationed last summer, but it has been over a week since I have seen my own dad. I think that poises some series problems.

I am far less active than I was five years ago, even though I follow blogs about excercising. I spend more time again, reading about what other people enjoy and experience, rather than going out there and doing it myself. The world wide web has an addictive quality that leaves you feeling like you can just keep exploring, and are actually doing yourself some good.

I think that my life would be much more orgainized and meaningful without as much technology. While it can make life convenient, I miss being simple.

  7. Certainly, all the tools that new technology offers the world are very handy and incredible. In my case, my computer and cell phone are the basic technology devices that I typically use. For example, every morning I depend on my cellphone since it serves me as my alarm clock. This amazing tool helps me to wake up on time so I can attend to my early classes. During the day, I do not text much, but at night, I usually hold a short conversation with my relatives and friends. Furthermore, on weekends, I commonly use my cell phone to communicate with my relatives that live in other countries. In the same manner, I normally expend a couple of hours using my computer on a daily basis, like right now, to do my school assignments, revise my emails, check my banks accounts,etc.. I enjoy playing video games, but I prefer to participate in outdoor activities such jogging, playing soccer, and playing the guitar, so that keeps me away from expending much time in front of a technology device playing games. In short, new technologies are very helpful and enables me to fulfill my daily responsibilities, as well as, it allows me to have a constant communication with my love ones.

  8. Technology can be my best friend and my worst enemy. From a strictly educational perspective, technology has greatly helped in making research a less time consuming task. Instead of looking through journals by hand in a library, I can get online and access countless journals and peer reviewed articles with ease. I remember when I started college and I didn't have my own laptop. At this time I was commuting an hour and a half every day roundtrip, and I would have to wait all day to get back and do my assignments on the home computer. I thought it was awesome once I could go virtually anywhere with my laptop to work on my assignments. While this is all good, I feel that technology can easily take over someones life. As a waitress, I have seen people sit down at a table and play games or text on the phone the entire meal. I have seen parents hand their children iphones and ipads while waiting for their food. What happened to communicating with the people right in front of you? Nothing should ever take the place of that. I have known couples to have full blown arguments all through texting each other on their phones. How can you read one's emotions or facial expressions over a text message? You can't. Hand written letters are a thing of the past, and I remember as a little kid, those being the coolest things ever. On a daily basis I think I spend probably 2 hours on the computer, and probably 45 minutes on the phone and/or texting. Much of this time is spent studying or communication with my mom and boyfriend who both live out of town. I refuse to get a "smart phone" because I don't want to have internet, apps, and games all at my fingertips at all times. I want to enjoy company when it is present, and stay in touch with what is real, not virtual.

  9. Technology has significantly influence how I do things on a daily basis. It has definitely made things more convenient for me such as communicating, researching, online banking, entertainment (music, movies, etc.),and because of my hectic schedule- online classes. Being a mom, I'm always doing a million things at once so being able to save time and having the comfort to do things at home or on my phone when I'm on the go is super handy. Usually throughout the day, I'm texting, searching, checking emails, and checking my facebook often, but at night when I'm doing my homework, I'm on my laptop. On a daily basis, I would say I spend about 5+ hours using technology.

I notice I spend a lot more time using technology since I have internet on my phone. It's amazing how you can find out anything on the internet. I also do most of my communication over the internet or through texting, rarely do I talk on the phone. All in all i would say i spend around 3-4 hours a day using technology.

  11. New technologies definitely take up a good amount of my time. I don’t spend all that much time texting or playing video games, but I am a bit addicted to the internet. Every morning when I wake up I have a cup of coffee and check the news online for about an hour. To me, it’s the equivalent of my parents watching the news or my grandparents reading the newspaper, but the internet is much easier to sift through what is actually relevant and interesting. Every day I probably spend 4-6 hours on the computer. Not all of that is browsing the web, it’s also writing and doing homework assignments. If I’m on vacation and I don’t check the internet for a few days, I feel out of touch with society.

  12. New technologies take up a huge amount of time in my daily schedule. The first thing I touch in the morning is my phone and the last thing I touch at night before I go to sleep is my phone. My daily schedule consists of school and work; technology consumes most of my time whether I am at work or in class. I check my phone whether it be for emails, facebook notifications, texts or simply the time every few minutes. I feel completely naked if I forget my phone at home or if it dies while I'm out. I bring either my ipad or laptop to class with me to take notes on and occasionally browse the web so even when I am not at home, I am still connected. Due to the fact that I have started buying my books for school on my ipad, I am actually using technology more than ever before. I probably spend half of my waking hours using some type of technological device. Due to the changing times, our generation feels that it is almost a necessity to be online and connected to the world. Being able to have all of the resources that I do on my iphone such as gps, email, text messages and apps, it makes it almost necessary for me to use technology to get through my day.

  13. Life today is very different than what it was a couple of years ago. There are times that I feel I can't catch up with the lates form of technology. So much more of my time is devoted to things like checkin my email, and especially, texting. A lot of that I believe has to do with the fact that phones make it so much easier for us to have those eimails in our hand, and just like a text message phones today alert us when a new email has been delivered. I find myself checking my phone as soon as I wake up in the morning and after I step foot off the bed, my phone is in my hand the rest of the day. Yes, there are times when I say to myself that I will try to detach myself from my phone or computer but it is virtually impossible because for school I need my phone for emails and now I also need it for work. My bosses and supervisors send text messages directly to my phone all day long. It is hard to believe right? What happened to a good old fashioned phone call? Times have changed and we have easily adapted to those changes, but it is fun to look back at where we started and where we have came to be.

    1. I definitely agree with Lesley that it is virtually impossible to detach myself from a phone or computer. Businesses are communicating through emails and texts. I myself send text messages to let a co-worker know that the schedule is posted. There are times where an emergency comes up; therefore, receiving a text message from the co-workers has become a great convenience. The technology is definitely making it more convenient for an everyday life.

  14. Thanks to technology, my life is less stressful. As a full-time student and working a part-time job, it allows me to balance my daily activities. Using the web, I can pay bills online; I can shop online; and I can take care of other matters all in the comfort of my own home. Social websites are truly remarkable because I can socialize and interact with all my friends online. Another benefit would be taking online courses! Oh, how wonderful it’s to wake up every morning and feeling motivated. Motivated to make it through the day and know that I can submit my homework assignments online. To estimate my total Internet usage, I would say I spend three hours on the web.

I use the internet probably at least ten to twenty minutes an hour. By this, I am including the use of my cellular phone of course! I use my phone to wake me up in the morning, listen to music, make appointments, schedule meetings, email my boss, listen to Pandora on the way to work, and capture great photographs when I need them. 18. Technology has taken a tremendous affect on my life. It has become a part of my everday life. My cell phone is always with me, otherwise, I will feel as if I was lost. Everything is connected to my cellphone. I have both work and personal information connected to my phone. In order to keep myself up to date with everything, I need to have my phone on hand. Cell phones went from being a luxury item to being a necessity that I must have in life in order to keep myself operated. My laptop has also become a necessity to my life. Everything I do is with my laptop. School, work, and personal life is all linked to my laptop. For example, this class is required to have access to a computer and the internet. In addition, work is required to have a POS system in order to keep the business going. Without the system, it will be harder to work. I think I spend my entire day around technology. I have co-workers that constantly keep me updated with their availability to work. I feel that my entire family has made technology as part of our necessity.

    1. Cathy, I agree with you on the feeling of being lost without my cell phone. When I leave the house I always check for two things first, a phone and a wallet. The sad thing is I always check for the phone first. The few times I have forgotten it, it leaves a feeling of being lost and a slight sense of dread. What happens if I get in a wreck and can’t call for help, or what happens if my wife calls due to a emergency. These same problems were a worry for our parents who did not have the option of a cell phone, yet I doubt they feel a sense loss or dread when going about their business.

  19. Before I had smartphone I was only able to use my cellphone to make calls and to text. Upgrading to a smartphone gave me acces to the internet at all times of the day and this helps me get more done through out the day. I can check my e-mail, Facebook, bank account, bills, and basically do anything else that you can do on a desktop, but I don't have to wait to get home or to a library to get things done. It is really convinient because I am always in a rush in the mornings and smartphones allowed me to have all information that I need at my hands without having to turn on a computer. As soon as I wake up I check to see if I have any missed calls, reply to text messages, and check my facebook. I usually read what others post beause it lets me know how my friends are doing and keeps me connected to family in other states, and those who are in Mexico. I spend between ten to fifteen minutes every moring on my cell phone surfing the web. It has become a habbit to check my email numerous times during the day, to make sure Im up to date with things going on at school and work.New techonology comes in handy when you live in a fast paced country like America because we want to get things done faster.Smartphones allows us to take care of business with just a simple touch or click.

My day begins with waking up to my cellphone it's my alarm clock every morning and also it is used to communicate with my sister on a day to day basis because we don't share the same schedule of classes and we both need to know where we both will meet after school and also with my mom who doesn't live in Bakersfield asks me to call at least once so she can know I am alright. Moreover, school requires to check up on emails daily to know what is due for the week, therefore emailing on the computer is a must in todays society. 21. My life has changed quite a bit from when I was a child. I remember growing up and spending a lot of time outside playing with friends, then one day I played a game on my friend’s computer and begged my parents that night for one. I tried the whole I need it for school approach which only netted me a word processor. Even on a machine that you could only use to type I would spend hours on trying to make pictures out of symbols...was never any good at it but I would try. Eventually after my first computer and many after it, I find myself surfing the web, playing games, checking email a lot each day every day. Never realized how consuming it was until today when I had to try and put a number on it. Gun to my head I would say a good 6-7 hours of my life revolves around the computer or cell phone. The majority of my waking life is spent slaved to a machine it seems with the smaller half consisting of family, food and school. Wow.

  22. New Technologies have changed my life for instance I use my phone to set my alarm to get up for school, browse the web from the palm of my hand, workout in front of my television my using the xbox kinnect technology, and use apps on the iphone to find general information about science. Majority of my time is spent at work and school but about 2 hours is spent online, 1 hour on television, and 3 hours on phone in one day. My life revolves around technology too much and gets hard to try to stay away from using it especially when using facebook to connect with friends online. Furthermore, if there were no technology than there would be alot of time on my hands.

  23. • Just looking at the first part of my day one can see that my life is consumed with today’s new technologies. I wake up to my alarm on my I-Phone, I then check if I have any texts, Facebook posts, or if I have anything relevant to post on Facebook, then I pick some good music to play off my I-Phone while I get ready for my day. It has gotten to the point that every time I get onto a computer I mindlessly log onto my face book, email accounts, and even online banking accounts before I even think about starting something important like homework. I would say at least 5 hours of my day is devoted to my computer, phone, and television, and would be more if I wasn’t in school and in a sport. Boredom seems to have a big impact on my use of technology. If I am waiting for something I will text, Facebook, and play games just because I have nothing better to do. So I think they key to not letting technology get the better of you is to stay busy and physically active. So now I am going to post this on a blog for my online class!

  24. My life is different because I rely on the technology of the internet for searches, entertainment, and it is required for taking this class. I would say that I devote at least 2 hours a day to checking email, texting, etc on the computer. I don’t have internet in my home yet because I moved back to Porterville from Bakersfield and when I tried to transfer my internet, At&t told me that the speed is not available in Porterville and if they gave me the speed that was available, it would be 6x slower than it was in Bakersfield. So I am still shopping around. In the meantime, I go to the library and use their internet.

Spending evenings at school or friends houses to do internet research was not fun. Before moving out to Visalia I would browse homes and eliminate from the list if they were not in a high speed internet area, that's how bad I needed fast internet.

  25. My life has changed lots due to technology because I can stay in contact with my family who do not live here in the United States through the Internet or email. I work at a school, and I have to check my email as soon as I arrive at work because everything is posted or state through email. If I have to help the teachers, they send me an email. I have to check my schedule and confirm meetings through email, or sometimes I am email to make a call to certain students' homes. I get emailed on anything that is related to my job. Another big chuck of my time is when I use the telephone. I have to be on the phone all the time because I have to answer the phone or make a phone call to children's parents. Technology does consume most of my day at work, however, I rarely play computer games. At home technology does not come into play much I do text my best friends, but it is three times per week.

    1. Nora,
We have a few things in common. I have to check my email constantly and talk on the phone all day at work. But it's nice when I can use technology to communicate with family members in far away places for free. I finally have my Dad emailing me and using it on a daily basis which is awesome. As long as my parents don't get on Facebook we are headed in the right direction with technology.

  26. How is your life different because of new technologies?

My life is 100% different because of new technologies. I work in the technology industry and with our new technologies I would not have a job security or maybe even a job. I get paid to keep up with new technology and implement it into our work place. I am able to make life easier at work by using technology automating many tasks for my self and other employees. It is because of new technologies that I am able to take classes online and further my education while saving money and 3 hours of commute time. With out new technologies I don’t know where I would be in life.

How much energy do you expend checking email, texting, or playing games?

I spend most of the day communicating via email and on the phone totaling an average of 9 hours a day. I hate texting so I try to avoid it if possible but on average about 30 minutes a day. It is because of email and texting that I refuse to get a smart phone. Shocking! I know! I'm in an industry were all technologists are expected to have the latest and greatest mobile devices but not me. I'm rocking a $16 dollar phone from Best Buy with no data plan. I like healthy boundaries and having no access to my email account while I'm away from office is amazing. Though, I must confess I do have mobile internet access for my laptop just in case of an emergency. The one area I wish I could spend a little bit more time would be playing video games. Unfortunately, because of work and school work I play on average about 3 hours a month.

  27. Technology has significantly impacted every aspect of my life. To be quite honest technology has a strong control of me. I currently work for a cell phone giant in At&t so I'm constantly dealing with the rapid changes in technology and adapting to them. I at least spend 10 hours of my entire day somehow interconnected with a form of technology. Emails is the main form of communication at my job and also cell phones. For instance, many of my customers I sell phones to will text me with questions or call me. On a personal note, I pay bills online, online banking, online classes, etc. Furthermore, since I'm not from Bakersfield I use Skype to stay connected with my family back home so again technology allows me to do may things I would not be able to do. What this ultimately means is that without technology many things would be much more difficult for me since it even affects my pay check so I'm very dependent of technology. We will see where the future takes us with technology since it controls us in these ways: texting and driving is highly popular, we cannot seem memorize any cell phone numbers anymore, and lastly our writing skills are deteriorating due to text messaging. Technology is a great tool we must be wise in the form we use it.

  28. Technologies is a very wide phenomenon and technological advancements in various fields affect the life of each one of us. Some of the various fields are computers, internet, automobiles, communication, and electronics. Each one of these fields of technology affect my daily life style. I wake up with my clock that is built in my phone, when I am getting ready for the day i listen to my ipod and I drive my car when I get around town. Technology has taken the majority of my time during the day. I cant really account for that much time where i don't use technology. The only time I am not using technology is when i am sleeping for 6-8 hours. Technology has made life much easier, compared to days when we didn't have it.

  30. hey all, sorry for the late post, something went totally wrong with my technology and didnt know we had blogs, but here we go, so the technologies in my life are very important to me because i grew up in a world where technology is apart of our lives. i use technology from waking up to my alarm, to listening to music to facebooking. I honestly spend more than half of my day connected to technology weather its tv or my phone to stay in contact with my friends through facebook. its kind of sad but true that the world nowadays and the new generation cant go a day without their phone, i know that i feel very "naked" without my phone on me and its just because i've always had one and are use to it being with me
